Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of play.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.

Play-Off Decider

This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.
