At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. Over 80 people were arrested.

Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "horrified" by the security action, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements near the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Government representatives stated no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Community members have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the mission, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the city.
