Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Board Resignation
The former official announced he would step back from public roles after Congressional panel released his frequent messages with the financier

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

The economist stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the prospects of the organization, and look forward following their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed communications showed that the economist exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood his choice to resign.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.

Congressional Action

This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to pass a legislation that would require the federal prosecutors to release its documents on Epstein.

The bill will afterward move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has stated he intends to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

Email Contents

A collection of financier-linked messages disclosed by the legislative panel recently mentioned several high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.

The messages indicated that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the official to notable international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were released with the wider community, the former official said he took "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and fix connections with the persons most important to me".

Previous Positions

The professor served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He headed the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments recently on this week, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in DC where the professor was a researcher, verified that the economist was ceased to be connected with the organization.

He became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
